For deep relaxation.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Who does it affect?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Frozen Shoulder is extremely uncommon amongst young people, and is almost always found in the 40+ age group, usually in the 40-70 age range.\u00a0 Approximately 3% of the population will be affected by this, with slightly higher incidence amongst women, and five times higher prevalence in diabetics.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">What is Frozen Shoulder?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Adhesive Capsulitis is the medical term for Frozen Shoulder \u2013 sometimes abbreviated to FSS (frozen shoulder syndrome).\u00a0 This is a condition which affects the ability to move the shoulder, and usually only occurs on one side.\u00a0 Sometimes the problem can spread to the other shoulder (approximately 1 person in 5).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>What causes it?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are two classifications of frozen shoulder syndromes:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Primary &#8211; No significant reason for pain\/stiffness<\/li>\n<li>Secondary &#8211; As a result of an event such as trauma, surgery or illness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is not known exactly what causes this problem, however it is thought that the lining of the joint (the capsule) becomes inflamed, which causes scar tissue to form.\u00a0 This leaves less room for the humerus (arm bone) to move, hence restricting the movement of the joint.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Symptoms<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This condition has been described in three phases, so the symptoms will differ depending on the phase of the condition<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>The Painful Phase<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gradual onset of aching shoulder<\/li>\n<li>Developing widespread pain, often worst at night and when lying on the affected side<\/li>\n<li>This phase can last anywhere between 2-9 months<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>The Stiffening Phase<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stiffness starts to become a problem<\/li>\n<li>Pain level usually does not alter<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty with normal daily tasks such as dressing, preparing food, carrying bags, working<\/li>\n<li>Muscle wastage may be evident due to lack of use<\/li>\n<li>This stage can last between 4-12 months<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>The Thawing Phase<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gradual improvement in range of movement<\/li>\n<li>Gradual decrease in pain, although it may re-appear as stiffness eases<\/li>\n<li>This stage can last between 5-12 months<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prevention is key Sports massage should play an important\u00a0role in the life of everyone,\u00a0whether they are injured or not.
